The article presents the results of a study of the chemical composition, structure and topology of the materials of the «Nakidka» camouflage kit for combat armored vehicles using the scanning electron microscopy method. The results were obtained during instrumental research employing a JEOL Ltd. (Japan) JXA-8200 X-ray microanalyzer and a JSM-6490LV scanning electron microscope equipped with an INKA Energy 350XT energy-dispersive spectrometer.
The research findings indicate that the «Nakidka» camouflage kit is a multilayer material (a total of 8 layers) with an overall thickness of approximately 7.5 mm and a high carbon content (about 80 %). These layers function as radio-absorbing dielectric (non-magnetic) materials and reduce the detectability of the equipment in the radar range. Electromagnetic wave absorption occurs due to dielectric, magnetic and conduction losses, which are maximized to achieve the highest shielding efficiency. The thickness of the dielectric layers is optimized for phase matching of the reflected radar signal between the layers. This design provides a gradient change in the dielectric properties of the coating through its depth, which reduces reflection and increases absorption over a wider frequency range. Additional reduction of reflection in the lower radar frequency range is facilitated by the presence of magnetic microparticles.
The study was conducted to create an information base for the identification of camouflage means and the development of algorithms for detecting combat armored vehicles equipped with signature reduction technologies.
