The paper presents the results of the research of russian federation armored vehicles (T-72B and T-72B3) spaced armour anti-cumulative defense shields captured by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the course of a large-scale invasion of russian troops to seize the territory of the independent Ukraine.
On the basis of the performed analysis, geometrical dimensions of the cell of the protective screen were established: the distance between the horizontal plates is 55 mm, between the vertical plates 300−500 mm, thickness of the plates is 4 mm. Such parameters of the protective screen are not new and were used by the Soviet Army for protection of armored vehicles during combat operations in the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
Based on the obtained geometric dimensions of the shield cell and thicknesses of the plates the probability of destruction of an RPG grenade on the protective shield was calculated including in case of a possible roll of the armored vehicle. The calculated values of the fracture probability are 0.5 and decrease to 0.33 when the roll angle increases to 25˚.
Based on the results of numerical simulations of the interaction between the RPG grenade and the protective shield made by the russian federation, it is established that its design will ensure that the conductive contour of the PG-7L grenade is short-circuited. At the same time, it is doubtful that the conductive circuit of the PG-7M grenade (and grenades whose payload is close in diameter: RPG-22 «Netto» RPG-26 «Aglen», PG-7VS) will be short-circuited on impact. However, the protective shield will damage the grenade's shaped funnel, which in turn will lead to asymmetric collapse of the shaped funnel and a sharp decrease in its armor penetration capability if it is detonated on the vehicle’s body.
